One of the tools we can make use of when learning a foreign language is a pronouncing dictionary. In the latest edition of the Longman Pronunciation Dictionary (LPD), authored by J. C. Wells, we can find a number of relevant facts about the (changing) pronunciation of English. Below is a link to a video where Prof. Wells explains how a number of words are pronounced. After watching the video, comment on what you've found most interesting. Do you think it is worth learning about these things?
Dr. Wells about preference polls in LPD
Martín, I firmly believe that it is quite important to learn how the English pronunciation is changing. We will be prfessionals of that language so that we should upgrade you knowledge.
ReplyDeleteMartín, may be my comment is not very interesting but I have to say that I´ve learnt a new word.. that is MISCHIEVOUS, and it is quiet interesting the different ways that it could be pronounced. Another thing that called my attention was the use /tʃ/ and /dʒ/ sound nowadays...

Dear Ana, I don't think your comment is uninteresting at all. And I'm sure you'll always remember this word you've just learnt. Congrats!!!
ReplyDeleteYou're right, Carolina. And the more we know, the better. I hope you and your classmates can use this blog as a learning opportunity. Bye...
ReplyDeleteHi Martin, I just wanted to tell you and my new classmates that I'm attending theses classes again this year. I think it is a great idea to let us participate and keep in touch with you through this page. I find it very interesting having the opportunity of visiting different sites that I didn't know. Through this blog I think it is much easier to get information about pronunciation. I consider Phonetics as important as Language and Grammar but I find it more difficult that the other. I hope to have the chance this time. I want to pass this subject this year and with the useful help of this tool and hard study, I think I'll do it. It also will help us all to learn beyond the textbooks we have, and that is also very interesting.
ReplyDeletePersonally I have some problems with certain vowels and checking them in this site I could at leats understand how to pronounce them correctly... I mean, I think so. hahaha
Hi Martin: I´ve found this interview very interesting. What I like most about it is that it helped me to realize that some times when I´m not sure about the pronunciation of a word is not that I´m pronouncing it wrong. Is good to know that we have several options when we use a particular lenguage and what we may take into acount when deciding between some of it.

Hello Martín, i think this is a very interesting post, because as we want to speak in the future as englsh speakers, it is very important to know the different ways in which a word can be pronounced, accodring to the circumstances, and by doing this, try to sound in the most natural way possible. ReplyDeleteThere is also a difference in the pronounciation of the word "direct" (direct/dairect).
ReplyDeleteI remember that a few years ago an English speaking member of a music forum posted a thread asking how each of us pronounciated that word, and it was shocking to see that it was almost even between the two! I just tried to find that thread but I think some data from that site was lost... :(
This Blog is very interesting teacher! I am sure will be very successful!
ReplyDeleteBest Wishes!

It is quite an interesting video!
ReplyDeleteIt's good to know not only "how" but also "why" the pronunciation of some words changes, in particular the differences depending on the speaker's age.
I do agree with you Camila. Language is a living organism and as such, it keeps changing! Part of the change is in the hands of younger speakers, who constantly innovate.
